About Darul Aman Palace

The Darul Aman palace is one of the historical areas of Afghanistan, southwest of Kabul city. The palace is located on a hilltop called “Afshar Tappa” and was Amanullah Khan’s reign Centre. Under the supervision of German architect “Walter Harten” and his team, the building construction started in the early 1920s. This beautiful three-floor building contains about 150 rooms, 32 bathrooms and toilets, and a big library.

After the Amanullah Khan kingdom, the house witnessed many destructions caused by the coup, instability, and civil war. When Habibullah Kalkani took power, the house remained empty for a short period, and later it was restored and housed by the Ministry of Defense. Additionally, the house was again set on fire during the communist coup of 1978. And finally, upon the Mojahedin’s arrival in the 1990s, the house was severely ruined and remained unused for over two decades.

The palace’s restoration and renovation was part of a $16 million project started in 2016 by over 80 engineers and architects, including females. Finally, its work was completed and opened on Afghanistan’s centenary full Independence Day.
